Free Boiler Grants for UK Veterans
Both veterans who own their own homes or are private tenants could be in line for a free boiler grant which could help them heat their home more efficiently. Under a Government-backed ECO Scheme, if you are a veteran in receipt of certain qualifying benefits you may be eligible for help to get a new boiler for the property you own, or to even have central heating fitted for the first time if you are currently living in private rented accommodation.
As part of the boiler scheme, the ‘Big Six’ energy suppliers, which includes SSE, EDF Energy, British Gas, npower, E.ON UK and ScottishPower, are obliged to provide funding for grants towards the installation of new energy efficient boilers for those households who have boilers that are at least 7 years old. And these grants are open to veterans, or anyone living permanently in your household who is in receipt of one of a range of eligible benefits.
Even if you don’t own your own home, there is still an opportunity to apply for funding as a tenant if you live in privately rented accommodation which does not have, and has not previously had a central heating system. As a veteran in receipt of one of the qualifying benefits, you would be the applicant rather than your landlord, although you would require the landlord’s permission in order to proceed with a first time boiler grant application. As a tenant in council owned properties, housing association homes, or other local authority run social housing, you would not be eligible for the scheme.
